Broadway at the Gardens Presents the Hunchback of Notre Dame
February 15th – 24th at Lewis Family Playhouse
Broadway at the Gardens is taking on the challenge of famed Disney song-writer Alan Menken's powerfully sweeping score of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. With a cast of 40, including a haunting choir, Victor Hugo's gothic novel comes to life on stage in February 2019.
The show centers around tension between the mysterious bell-ringer of Notre Dame Cathedral, Quasimodo, his stern-hearted caretaker, Frollo, and the beautiful, yet outcast Gypsy, Esméralda. The production includes songs from the Academy Award-nominated Disney animated feature as well as new songs by Alan Menken and Stephan Schwartz. Peter Parnell's new book embraces story theatre techniques as well as features verbatim passages from Hugo's original work. Director, Marla Gam-Hudson, is making her Lewis Family Playhouse debut and describes her vision of the production as "not the safe Disney version." She says the music is similar, but the plot follows closely to the classic Victor Hugo novel and the production will be "an interactive environmental piece of theater… that will be fresh and new and will bring color and wonder to the audiences."
This is definitely a production to add to your calendar so be sure to purchase your tickets before they sell out!
